Step One: Getting your business on Facebook!

Get your business on FacebookYour business has a website, so why do you need to be on social media too? Your website provides the foundation for your business – a place for people to learn about the product or service you offer and compare you to competitors and of course it is most likely the main portal for business transactions.

Social media, however, is what connects you with your customers! An active social media presence is key to marketing your business, retaining current customers and driving traffic to your website. But before you start turning Facebook “friends” into profits, you need to create a Facebook page for your business.

Here are the basic steps for creating/updating your business page on Facebook:

  • Log In to your personal account.
  • Go to to create your business page.
  • Your Business Page will be “tied” to your personal profile, but they are completely separate. No one can see your personal information or even the name of the page administrator(s).
  • Select the main category for your business.
  • Do not select Local Business or Place unless you have a physical storefront (not a home office) that your customers come to.
  • Choose your category from the drop down menu and name your page!
  • Select the box next to “I agree to Facebook Page Terms” and click Get Started.
  • Add your profile photo – ideally something related to your business, either a storefront picture or your brand logo.
  • Add your About information. This will appear under your cover photo on your timeline. Make sure this 155 character description is keyword-rich for Google searches!
  • Remember to add a link to your website!
  • You can also add links to your other social media pages.
  • Click Yes to confirm that you are a real business and then click Save Info.

Congratulations! Your business is now on Facebook! Next steps:

  • “Like”  your new page.
  • Facebook is going to take you to a place for you to invite your email contacts, which you can either do now or wait until you have posted some content to your page first.
  • Upload a cover photo!
  • Add to your About page. Click Update Info from the Edit Page dropdown on your Admin panel.

Now you are ready to post content and get people to “Like” your page! Good luck!!
