This special live-stream public access show will be dedicated to this critically important issue that affects thousands of families in the Schenectady area, with in-depth interviews of local area direct care workers, self-advocates and local families affected by developmental disabilities. WHEN: 4PM Thursday, March 23rd WHERE: Special set of Open Stage Media on the stage at Robb Alley in Proctors, downtown Schenectady (Located near the main entrance from State Street) WHO: Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara; local area direct care workers, self-advocates and local families affected by developmental disabilities, Puzzles Bakery & Café (owner and employees), Schenectady ARC, Living Resources, the Wildwood School and many other ‘BFair2DirectCare’ Coalition Partners This year, the Assembly budget proposal included $45 million to support a plan that creates a living wage for direct care workers. This includes the non-profit agencies like Schenectady ARC that provide the supports and services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Statewide, ten percent of these positions are currently vacant and the turnover rate is now above 20 percent. “Our direct care workforce is facing a staff shortage that has now become a crisis. I’m pleased to see the Assembly take action on such an important issue and again call on Governor Cuomo to also make it a priority,” said Assemblyman Santabarbara. "Schenectady ARC and its partner organizations are very encouraged that both houses of the State Legislature have included this funding in their budget proposals; but now we know that it's critically important to bring this advocacy straight to the Governor from our local community to ensure it stays in the final 2018 budget,” said Schenectady ARC Exec.
